Thanks for the follow-up. I went ahead and purchased the Arduino Uno. Turns out, it was a good idea, because my next project required serial communication with the Unity game engine. It looks like the Metro Express and the Arduino Uno use different communication protocols, and the Metro Express didn't work with either of the projects I was running.
